So with a LM time penalty for human error, why would you want your opponent to immediately lose by misplaying a roll or making one of the mistakes you mentioned?

Well, you haven't heard exactly what the penalty is.

I want a modest penalty for any rules infraction. This includes:

  • Making an illegal play
  • Handling the dice on the opponents turn
  • Picking up ones own dice
  • Eating a greasy burger while playing on my board
  • Maybe some others that I'm not thinking of

For one of these violations, you'll be penalized 60 seconds on your clock. I don't really care about the value of 60 seconds, but perhaps it shouldn't be too much smaller.

If your reserve time under 60 seconds when you incur a penalty, then you don't lose the match, however, upon the next infraction, you WOULD lose the match.

In practice, I don't want to enforce these, but I want it codified so that I can. For example, there IS already a penalty on the books for picking up the dice before the opponent hits the clock, but I've never seen it enforced.

So when would I enforce it? When my opponent makes a lot of misplays or rules violations. I need to be able to protect myself.

A few years ago, when I was playing regular in the Las Vegas Backgammon Club, there was a guy who regularly made illegal moves. He was an out and out cheater, and I told him so, because 95% of his illegal moves swung equity in his favor. He had no incentive to stop, because there was no penalty for his transgressions.
