In Response To: What if illegal moves were a capital crime? (Taper_Mike)

So lets say that the penalty for making an illegal move was that you're opponent was granted 1 penalty point.

I'd expect that the number of illegal moves made would be significantly fewer.

However, I also suspect that the number of players we have might dwindle. Also there'd be more players not wanting to play with a clock.

There's also be heated arguments about illegal moves when one player disagrees.

I think that 15 seconds time run off is the right penalty. What do the Japanese do? What about the Danes?

But what to be done when no clock is being used? Then again, it is pure idiocy to play tournament BG at anything above beginner level without a clock.

What about this situation? I roll a 54 and quickly play a 6 and then am studying how to play my 4. Playing legal moves, my opp is likely to tell me that I played a 6 illegally. But if there's a penalty he might just wait til I move my 4 and hit the clock and then tell me. But, what if he wasn't watching carefully and didn't realize that I'd misplayed my 6, but as he is reaching to pick up the dice, he notices that I rolled 54 and that the position on the board is impossible for that roll? Do we accuse him of being an unethical jerk just wanting to take advantage of the penalty?

Maybe the answer is that tournament BG as we progress towards the next decade needs to move forward to being played on tablets or laptops interfaced into a tourney server? Now there are no illegal moves, no fast rolls, no arguments about the score etc etc. Matches are now quicker since the board is set up instantly. We can lower delay time to 10 sec from 12, since dice are rolled instantly. Matches are instantly recorded and also can be streamed from the tablets. Hmmm...but doesn't this take away some of the "fun factor" in attending a tourney? It certainly makes the game more of a science, but isn't that what is happening anyhow?

What is the solution? Is there one?

I'll close in again stating that illegal moves suck and watching a careless opp very carefully also sucks.
