I am, and have always strongly advocated for more payouts.
Short summary: 1. Why not have more people walk away happy and with at least getting their entry fee back? 2. Why not have more people seeingn their names on the point standings? I am convinced this will increase participation. 3. Most people are hedging in the money rounds and even after that, proving that most feel the prize money (and points) is too too heavy. We all know how much luck it takes for any player to make it to the money round of a big event and it just feels lousy to walk away with nothing after your opponent rolls a 6-6 on the last roll to beat you. 4. Even the top players who feel it is to their advantage to pay fewer places and give the winner more will probably do just as well at the end of the year if the money is spread out to the quarters--how many times do the superstars get beat at that point!? 5. If you spread the money out and reduce the top purses a few hundred bucks, it will hardly be noticed and the winner will be just as thrilled to win. Also, there will simply be less hedging in the semis and finals.
I also believe we make a mistake limping the intermediate and open points in the abt. If you start the year intermediate you should be able to finish the year there and there should be separate awards and recognition for the top intermediate players each year. Of course if any choose to move up that is their prerogative.
I also was involved in and ran events in other games and sports and the more hope you give more people of walking away feeling like they were winners, the more people enjoy it and come back.
