Devil's Advocate .. etc etc

I am thinking that harsh punishment for illegal plays will make play even slower than it already is. I am not in favour of slow play and I generally don't think illegal plays happen very often so I am against harsh punishment for illegal plays.
I have now recorded my last 10 matches and there has been 0 illegal plays in all of those matches. However, in the last match my opponent started game 2 with 6 checkers on the mid and only 4 checkers on his 6 which went unnoticed during the match (this is a bit like an illegal play, except it doesn't happen as part of a play). I didn't see this until I was 4 or 5 rolls into the transcription when I noticed a difference in the position in the video compared to what I had in XG. I actually had to transcribe the sequence 3 times until I noticed what caused the difference.
I think that 1 penalty point is way too severe a punishment.
However, if it was decided that for the first illegal play which is noticed during a match you get a warning and for following illegal plays you get 1 penalty point for each of these, then I would be OK with that.
I hate it when my opponent makes many illegal plays (fortunately it only happens very rarely). In these matches I feel like I need to watch closely everything my opponent is doing to ensure he doesn't make more illegal plays. In these matches it would be nice to have an opportunity to punish it because frankly it is not fair that I need to spend a lot of energy to watch my opponent play, I should be able to just focus on my own game.
