You are right and I have been one of them. I think that it helps to have the right clock.

I got a ZMF (http://www.amazon.com/ZMF-II-Chess-Clock-Black-Blue/dp/B00C25PR0O/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1425495676&sr=8-9&keywords=chess+clocks) a while back. Nice clock and no real complaints but not intuitive to program. Anyone that saw me at the Capital Classic last September can attest to that.

Then for the San Antonio tournament I got a DGT North American (http://www.amazon.com/DGT-North-American-Chess-Clock/dp/B00312D2OU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425495676&sr=8-1&keywords=chess+clocks). Dead simple to program and use. Recommended.

And then of course there are the IPad apps, which may be the easiest of all. (Wish I had known about them before purchasing these clocks!)

And as to the general point that clocks should always be used. Yes.
