It's not +EV for anyone coming to a tournament unless it's held in their back yard or they have something else lined up. The tournament itself compared to the costs is clearly negative ev.

That depends on what you count. From a monetary point of view, it is not +EV to spend $12 to go out and see a movie either. But hopefully the entertainment value is worth more than $12.

Likewise with backgammon tournaments. If you count the entertainment value, and the socializing and the lectures, most players are getting a lot more out of the tournament than they put in.

The prospect of winning the tournament -- and the prestige that goes with it (not to mention ABT points) -- would be an additional attraction for the top players.
