Another Bobby Fischer.

In the early 1970s, Bobby was a rock star. His 1972 match with Boris was leading the evening news! The chess popularity in America was the precursor and the direct cause of the 1970s backgammon craze in the US.

On the face of it, this is a good answer, but I think the state of the world precludes a backgammon Fischer having the same kind of impact.

Fischer's immense popularity stemmed from the World Championship match with Spassky having Cold War implications. Fischer was brash (or just an asshole), a loner, and Americans saw him as a one man crusade against the Soviet chess machine.

Combine that with no internet at the time, and you have the 1970s version of "going viral."
