In Response To: Finish this sentence... (Chuck Bower)

I was 21 in 1972. Chess was very popular. Here in Cleveland, I'd play once a week at the Masonic Temple, and once a week at the YMCA. Get there late and miss getting a seat. All ages, and all into Bobby Fischer. Sitting at a table, matching wits with a live opponent was cool and acceptable. Never heard of Backgammon.

I think I first saw it in a bar. It was easy to pick up what was going on and seemingly could be played by anyone. My friends got into it, and it seemed overnight, around 1974, every bar in the city had backgammon going on. I tried to learn GO around that time, but couldn't find anyone to play.

I can't prove Bobby Fischer started the 70s backgammon craze, but as young male boomer of those days (there were lots of us), backgammon gave me much more satisfaction, fun, social interaction, a few bucks here and there, and, for me, kept alive Being Bobby without the skull bending chess sessions.
