Stick: I don't think many players have the thought you had vis-à-vis not attending a tournament because so many Giants would be in attendance.
No, probably not many, but I still don't think I'm the only person to have this thought.
I'm not trying to say that a tournament is better without so-and-so, but here's something that drove me up the wall a while back: Ed O'Laughlin would periodically tell me who was preregistered for the Capital Classic. The updates would only be about the Giants who were coming. It got to be really annoying, as if somehow that's the only people I care about. I tried, unsuccessfully, to impart the point that EVERY entry is one I care about.
I believe that any tournament director should be JUST as happy to see my pre-registration as Mochy's. [Maybe not exactly, since Mochy is entering a Big Boy's Jackpot and I'm not, so the tournament gets more rake from him, but I think I've made my point.]
As a one-off thing, playing against a Giant is pretty fun, but if you're a mid-range (at best) Open player like me, I have to say point blank that knowing a bunch of Giants are going to enter a tournament is NOT a draw for me. I do not have the time, the money, the time, the funds, and most importantly the time to go enter a big pile of ABT tournaments. I need to pick and choose. If Rory (or anybody) has a tournament where he's going out of his way to reel in a bunch of Giants... meh, I'll choose another tournament. I'm not picking on Rory at all -- I did go to his tournament once and it was very well done.
Sorry if that makes me an equity grubbing douchenozzle -- I think it makes me realistic.
