Thanks, Tim. This is exactly the kind of factors I need to consider. I am always looking for rules of thumb or lists of considerations, preferably with priorities, to help make one play over another. And I have really good ones for many types of positions, but there was a real hole in this type of problem.

I know what to do now...use your list and set up dozens of positions and keep making up variations until I can quickly gravitate to the right play most of the time, and at the very least, avoid the blunders.

Then, change the score and cube position and see if I understand how to adjust.

Then, I make a file of all these positions, summarize the rules of thumb, and turn it into a lesson for my students.

"You teach best what you most need to learn."

(Then I send it to my teaching partners, John O, Stick, Perry, David Rockwell and Tuvya, so they can add to it and make recommendations and use it themselves as well. This is how we have developed over 80 separate lesson plans so far.)
