CSI Special Private Side Pool

I don't usually read or post here much anymore but someone drew my attention to this thread so I thought I'd respond.
I don't think this is a good thing. I think it is overall a negative and it sets a bad precedent.
First, Phil is not in any way affiliated with the tournament. If you want to make some private bets amongst yourself, fine. No one can stop you or enforce anything anyway. However, making a public announcement seems like something that ought to be done those in charge of the tournament.
Second, there is a rake in the side pool. This doesn't sit right with me. It seems to be becoming a more common procedure at tournaments, but it seems to me, at the very least, opportunistic. It's not like it makes any difference at all to the tournament whether people enter side pools or not. Of course the staff and organizers work hard and deserve compensation, but that compensation ought to come from places other than side pools.
Are players really so concerned about their "equity", and if they are, why exactly are they so eager to pay high rakes?
I think side pools ought to be 100% return, and at fixed increments up to any unlimited amount. For example, a $100 side pool, a $200 side pool, a $300 side pool, a $400 side pool, up to a $infinite side pool. Or you can make them $60 or whatever. If you want to compete you just pay however much, and you could track it pretty easily with Excel, or by writing an '8' next to someone's name who entered the $800 side pool, etc.
The side pool should be an attendance draw for players who want to play for a bit more than the tournament's entry fee. If it doesn't increase attendance, it should at least enhance the overall experience for some players at no additional cost.
