It is getting better. Mochy, Michi, Akiko and others have been paid expenses to travel to some tournaments and have some sponsorship, and there will be upcoming special events with sponsorship and money added and possibly even some free-rolls for top players.

More and more celebrities and people with money are getting involved in the game. Also, unlike many other games the top backgammon players get to compete against lower level players paying the same entry fees and not having to give away handicaps.

I believe if we keep our eye on the ball...growing the game from the bottom up and giving more people a reason to take up and enjoy the tournament experience, there will be even more money in the pool to support our superstars.

We need the top players to make a decent living to be incetivized to stay with backgammon, and we need the tournament directors, staff and promoters to make money. But the way to do that is not to charge high fees to the small pool of players we have, but to increase the pool, give the players an enjoyable experience with a reasonable expectation of return on their investment, have more people walk away happy and with a little money, and do a lot more to make new players welcome and want to come back.

This is not brain surgery. All this takes is a little forward thinking beyond what is selfishly good for "me" in the next tournament I attend. There has been far too much of that kind of thinking for far too long.
