Some players obviously recognise positions akin to this and will play to save the gammon. For lesser mortals the logic is simple in the extreme. Its all about roll odds.
If white does not run to save the gammon brown will have 5/36 = 14% chance to get the backgammon with doubles immeadiately. At this match score this is satisfactory odds bearing in mind the following.
Now here's the thing should brown roll 11 there are only 3 rolls that fail to save the backgammon and may make the hit as well . Thats 3/36 = 8%. Any other roll other than 11 produces only one roll that fails 1/36=3%. You may not win the game or save the gammon but There is a dramatic decrease in gammon chances by not surrendering. Having the capability to use roll odds can be a powerfull tool, especially with some cube decisions. These are great odds to try and save the gammon. XG seems to agree.
