The themes are, Eric:

Look for plays that leave the fewest or least amount of shots next time;

consider every possible move or you could easily miss the best move;

spares are a good thing

Consider both sides of the board;

Consider the score and your goals and priorities relative to Gammonsite and wins.

And the biggest theme: you can't master bearing off "intuitively" but rather by study and deliberate practice. Same for every other part of the game. If you work hard and pay your dues you will improve and you will win more.
