I am not exactly sure how they compiled this number, but in the US we generally consider a major event to be an ABT event and/or something that invites and attracts players from all over the country rather than just a small area.
For tournaments outside the US it is again a larger event that attracts players from an entire country and possibly outside.
I doubt that we truly have a firm definition that everyone will agree on, but in my mind, something like a club event or a small regional event or invitational where there are 20 people invited cannot be considered a major event.
I believe if we were to see the list of the 75 events where Malcolm made it to the finals there would not be a debate that these were big tournaments.
I talked to Malcolm about this and he doesn't know exactly what his win percentage was in the finals, but he is confident it is well over 50 percent and he says some day he will try to come up with an actual percentage.
I also do not know if this number refers strictly to the Open Division or to the Masters as well, as I know Malcolm enters the Masters everywhere he goes and I know he has won many of those. I suspect it does include Masters events. Whether it does or not, it is still impressive. At most ABT events in the U.S. I believe it is probably a little easier to win the masters because you play fewer matches, but you are much more likely to play tougher competition in every match.
Just as impressive as Malcolm's wins is his PR. I have seen enough of his recorded matches to believe he would qualify for the under 4 PR club if he bothered to try, and he clearly has been one of the better players in the world for over 40 years. And you don't want to go against him in a big money chouette.
Malcolm is also one of 4 Diamond Level Founding Sponsors of the USBGF and was one of the first to step up and provide the funds and support to make this important organization a reality in the U.S. He clearly earned his way into the US Backgammon Hall of Fame, and he has been a great personal friend and help to me for many years. I used to live in Dallas and then commuted to Dallas weekly on business for several years and spent many hours playing with Malcolm and learning from him both live and via email.
