It's both Bob.
I dont take up peoples time here with a long explanation about pool gambling and all the nuances unless its cool with Stick and others here are interested, I've played pool for 10's of thousands of dollars, BG only $500/pt.
I would be more than glad next I see you to talk to you about pool its culture and what i have learned in BG over the past year. Its similar in many some ways, different in less.
The short answer to Bob's question:
"So it is the size of the wager instead of the quality of play that makes it exciting? What is special about pool in this regard?"
Is YES, because in pool, unlike BG you have to physically have the skill to execute the shot (or move in one pocket) after you have identified it. In BG if your a great player and see the best move-shuffling the checkers or doubling someone is easy. like BG higher stakes for some people means more pressure, So some guys who can play good for $50/game cant make a ball for $500/game-they fall apart for the money-when it counts. So watching performance anxiety in pool AND ESPECIALLY knowing how to bet on it or against it is one of the most important aspect of making side bets if you know both players.
Its called getting a guy rattled, and 100 other adjectives.
Typically its more fun to watch big action than small action as its more meaningful. Small action in pool can also be a dump to get the bet up higher-thats hustlin(correct spelling in the pool world).
With Sticks permission & interest level here i can go into more detail. And Bob if you ever want to talk about pool and the psychology math etc i'm happy to anytime.
best'
Eric aka Fatboy in the pool world.
FWIW I dont play pool good as you do BG, I play good, but was not born with the eye hand coordination to become a top player. My knowledge of pool is good as anyone alive.
