It is a legitimate site. Consider it like having a small hard drive in the cloud (internet). You can use it to save files like any other drive. You can also choose to make files public so others can get copies.

With your data being stored on the internet those files are easily accessible from any computer you install the Dropbox software onto including your smartphone, tablets etc.

Some people feel less secure having their data being held by a third party, so that may be a downside for some.
