The first book one should read is Magriel's Backgammon. After that I strongly recommend Trice's Bootcamp. No book is likely to be flawless as the bots have updated and become stronger over the years but like Backgammon, it's not essential that every problem is correct but how the thought process and criteria used for approaching such problems is presented. That being said, 501 is a bit of a mess getting about 25% of the problems dead wrong and thus causing those explanations to be off. That's a bit much.
