3 Things I Don't Get about Organized BG

"Corporate sponsorship, low entry fees, big prizes. Why didn't anyone else think of that? Should be easy right?"
1. How much is the Flamingo adding to the event in Vegas coming up? Ans: Not enough. Any event labeled "US Open" should have 50-100k in added money. I don't care if its rock, paper, scissors. Hosting the nation's national championship should be worth more to a casino than what they are paying.
2. The article a few years ago in the New Yorker suggested a decent amount of high-stakes action at these events. If this is even a little bit true, why are, generally speaking, tournament backgammon players so quick to downplay the gambling aspect of the game in favor of a science fair vibe? If the aim is to grow the game, maybe try marketing more like Poker.
3. How is it that GameColony.com can pull in 500-1000 bucks a day at a 20% rake and have the worst playing backgammon site ever when every other backgammon server in the US seems scared to death to let anyone play for a nickle? Whatever loophole they are using to justify taking action is big enough for a site that actually takes playing backgammon seriously.
So yea, it's not going to be easy, but maybe you have to know where you are going as an industry before you can get to work making it happen.
