I don't have time to roll this out but both SW & GNU agree that the double hit is correct by a mile. I also played it out a few times and agree it works out better. OtB, meaning over the computer, I was a bit stumped. I didn't like any of the alternatives. I knew the score argued for the most gammonish play but could I even be sure that wasn't making the 5pt? I looked at everything from the double hit to the quiet 10/7 8/7. I settled on hitting two but not because I knew what I was doing, only because I felt the other options had to be wrong and I wasn't sure if hitting both was wrong, so that's what I did.
Leaving 4s & 5s to hit and get a 4th checker (possibly a 5th) sent back when I don't have that many natural spares to play afterwards is too much. True, I don't fear the G loss, but my game is too brittle after making the 5pt. There's a lot more flex when you hit two, and it works out esp. well on any 6X aside from 62.
The score (after 0 games) is: gnubg 1, user 0 (match to 2 points, Crawford game)
