Awarding half a win for a bye makes perfect sense to me too.

Other modifications to consider:

1. Cut players based on their rank rather than on their number of losses. E.g., after three rounds, only the top 75% of players remain each round after that. (If there is a tie for last spot, all the tied players remain.)

2. Truncate matches that go longer than a preset time. Use a match equity table to determine the fraction of a win each player gets for the truncated match. This prevents long matches from holding up the tournament.
