It's often not about money:

How many students cheat to get a better grade? How many teachers cheat to make their students look good so they can get a better report? How many people cheat on their spouses, not for money, but for sex? How many people have cheated on non-money web sites to get a higher rating and be thought of as a better player?

How many little league baseball teams have lied about the age of players or where they live to have a better winning record? Have you ever played Scrabble with someone who made sure he knew where the blanks are so he could pick them and beat you? Have you ever played Monopoly with someone who accidentally moved his piece wrong to avoid landing in Jail?

Do you know someone who lied (same as cheating) about his health to get a pre-boarding pass to get a better seat on an airplane?

I could go on and on. Money is certainly an incentive, but it is only one of many that make people cheat. Some people cheat just for the pure joy of seeing if they can get away with it, or to beat someone because they get great joy out of winning or great pain from losing.

Do you know anyone who has NEVER cheated at anything? I don't. Including myself. It's like finding a person who says he never told a lie. Doesn't exist.

So as my grandpappy used to say: "Trust everyone but cut the cards."

I have played Bridge, Gin, Golf, Hearts, Backgammon and several other games and sports for pretty big stakes. I have made it a point to learn every possible way to cheat at each one of those games, just so I have a greater chance of catching someone cheating on me. And I have caught people. In spite of that, I am sure I have been cheated in ways that I don't know or didn't see...that's a risk of gambling or playing games. But if you arm yourself, you can at least reduce the risk and catch all but a real expert.
