I meant to write "Some gamesmanship, along with banter, add spice and variety to the game, but moreso in chouettes, and more among experienced players and near-equals."

I think there's a pretty clear disanalogy between backgammon and poker, as backgammon is a 'complete information' game (I think that's the term). Bluffing and misdirection are essential to the structure of poker, but not backgammon, where nothing about the game-state is hidden from either player. (Things like probabilities and take-point odds may be *unknown* to some players, but they are not hidden.)
