I don't own Advanced Backgammon and went through it only once, but as I recall, one of the main strengths of the book (shared by 501 Problems) is that it lays out a lot of the basic positions that you ought to know. If you're in the 8-9 PR range then I'd guess that one of the best ways for you to improve your game is to take each major area of the game and master some specific information about it. Learn a racing formula. Learn a few basic holding game positions. Learn a few early-game blitz positions. Learn some basic principles for backgames. And so on. Make sure you really know this information and have it at your fingertips, rather than merely nod in partial recognition when the information is shown to you. Robertie's selection of positions, I believe, still excellent.
The existence of bots doesn't mean you should throw away old books. Quite the opposite. The existence of bots means that "errors" in old books need not trouble you. You should be developing your own understanding of the game anyway. A large part of the value of the human over the bot is helping you focus on the right things.
Along these lines, I'd recommend Woolsey's Encyclopedia of cube reference positions if you don't already own it.
