Thanks, Mary. I am a proud owner of your CD, and recommend it, and all of your works, to backgammon players the world over!
In our small chouette, we generally follow the rules used by other players the local backgammon club, Backgammon by the Bay. In this case, I was the lucky player in the box, and explained to the nubie who defeated me that I was allowed to retain the box. On my way home, I wondered just how many victories were required to claim that right.
What worried me was a confused recollection I had of one of the stories related by Lewis Deyong in the Playboy Book of Backgammon. He describes a player who had been trying to break into a chou where a particular fish played. The regulars had been keeping him out so that they could keep the fish to themselves. His trick was to catch the fish in the box offering a suicidal cube to the team. When all passed, he proudly injected himself into the proceedings saying he would take. The fish, who was glad to find a sucker whom he would surely beat, invited him in. My confusion pertained to what followed, and as I said in my OP, just where the losers ended up after the game ended.
