In Response To: ruling in the Nordic Open SJ (christian munk-christensen)

So wait...does EVEERYONE know player A. was Victor and player B. was Jason? I was trying to be so discreet...Now for the long ass post. Rather than go into a long he said/he said battle, I am going to post Jason and my correspondence from facebook in it's entirety. And I would also posit to Jason, if he is so honorable, where are his supporters? You took a shot. Own it you little weasel. Just like you tried to take several in NYC. As well as one involving a certain British player and trying to get him to forfeit. Here's the deal..when people like you they tell you things. And I love stories. And I stand by my stories. I have been the subject of some horrific ones, and I proudly wear some of my mistakes. However, I don't cheat and I don't take shots at people and I think that those who do are bad humans. You, Jason, are a bad human. You actively cheered during a match in an opponent's face (who you weren't playing by the way) when he did poorly. You took that shot at Victor. I have seen you play many giants. Without fail, you want their opinion after the match, especially after you have won. You seem to take a perverse joy in rubbing their noses in it. Just like you talked of Victor's error in the game (which we only have your dubious word on). You would have stayed and tried to dissect the game, preening on your victory. Unless of course you were working an angle. Which you were. And I have the name of the player who you shushed. He is an English beginner, and we both know you did wrong. But he shouldn't be involved, since I think we are trying to attract new players, not scare them off. But let people read this thread, and make up their own minds. I will also include our messages before regarding your match with Raj that I commentated on with Falafel. Shall I include all the notes that were sent by you to others about me? You know, where you talked behind my back and said I shouldn't be allowed to commentate on matches? Let me know...and now...directly from facebook...I give you: not sure what to call it? I think the working title should be "Pack of Lies" but open to suggestions?

J-Hey Carter, I was just watching your commentary of my match against Raj and although I agree with much of the commentary, I think your pointing out constantly things like "oh how are they agonizing over this" or "Raj is putting his hands on his face" or "Jason is frustrated, it is absurd..." not only didn't make for good television but was actually a bit condescending to Raj and I because it doesn't convey that the match takes place under tremendous pressure and is worth thousands of pounds and since we are playing on the clock we have the ability to take as much time as we want to make our plays...

I am pointing this out because i am sure you are going to be asked to commentate again, but the way that you did it conveys that there is no reason to take the game seriously and I think really sends the wrong message.... I know your philosophy is different but I don't think it makes good TV

Additionally, you were the one who was taking the commentary away from discussing the positions and the match and onto infinite chat and pranks that is not the reason people turn in from far countries to watch the match... so I think you should watch the link and see you sounded and the programme came off.... Ok... i hope you take this as friendly criticism...... see you in MC May 12, 2014 8:53 pm Me: Please send me the link and realize I had been drinking; I tend to make it lighthearted; getting involved in match equities is not my forte; that was known when I was asked to commentate. I hope you didn't feel insulted...that was not my intention. Did you watch later commentary I has with Raj? I assume it was more of the same. May 12, 2014 10:00 pm Still me: So, did you notice that the "professional" commentary with Julian Fetterlein and Chris Bray had 1,000 less views and 1/10 th the comments? May 13, 2014 5:27 am

J-Hi Carter, I understand. I am speaking of session 2 on Sunday and my match with Raj starting at 18 minutes... here is the link http://new.livestream.com/accounts/7865009/lbo2014/videos/50634008

The London Backgammon Open 2014 by LBO2014 new.livestream.com

I think you were clever at many times and fun at others but once and a while insulting to Raj and I, and making it seem that we are or played much worse than you would have done.... and your comments about that I would 'complain' even when I rolled well is what rankles... even if it borders on the truth.. the way you mentioned things like this repeatedly makes us look bad

and I don't think it brings positive attention to the game, it was rather mocking Raj and I as if our mannerisms were not successful May 13, 2014 1:23 pm And now me: Your mannerism were. And you were in the semis together, where falafel and I would have preferred to be. I think you are looking at this with a jaundiced eye. The appeal is to make it fun and appeal to the masses, not make it an elitist pursuit that only appeals to a smakk segment. Have yet to find anyone (with one exception) that didn't enjoy falafel and my commentary more. And if you think I was harsh...were you muting falafel's comments? And yes jason...some of your mannerisms are a bit over the top.. Raj I am friends with and have seen for many many years his mannerisms May 13, 2014 4:44 pm

J-The issue is a dead letter now. It is done. I understand your perspective, but I wanted you to grasp mine as well. we are trying to build something of a community approach for backgammon. This is why I am now hosting a tournament in my home. I love falafel's and Sean's and many others approach to dissecting the game and its characters while promoting that community approach, I just fear that you might have been too jaded and too mocking, but I accept that it was in meant to be in good fun. So lets leave it at that.... September 21, 2014 5:55 pm Me (am I not the best or what?)-Well done on winning the UK open. 4 hours ago

Hi Carter, I just wanted to check in with you privately because I am rather flabbergasted with this public controversy. I overheard your saying something like 'Jason is trying to become the most hated player in backgammon and surpassing shahab ghodsi'... I am wondering if you could explain to me what I ever did and when that has made you so antagonistic to me. I remember that before the NYC episode you spoke condescendingly about me at the London Open when you commentated the match and I was personally shocked by that, but wasn't clear what the origin of that hostility was. I will be able to process your comments with greater understanding Me- You have to be kidding me. Do you not remember new York at all? And the shot you took at victor? 2 hours ago

J- We do obviously see things differently. Our match in NYC was scheduled for the next day but we were both free and the organizer wanted us to play it early. I also didn't think it was fair for you to not compromise after that on things like clock, etc. since I was tired and wanted to go home and play in the morning if you think that your upset at that justifies spreading rumours or publically defaming me, I may be missing something. where does the animosity come from... I was just so totally over that incident as just a normal BG situation of players with differing preferences and you happened to get your way

Me- Our match was not scheduled for the next day, it was scheduled for then. I COULD play the next day, provided I came early. Given I was staying in the city, that was not my choice. You tried to get a ruling for the next day, but I had to agree, which I did not, which is why we played. It is a clock preference event. I prefer clocks. You tried to say that you NOT preferring clocks meant no clocks. You were ruled against on that as well. And we rolled for board. And after all that, you ask for a hedge? I said next time, lead off with that. I then put on headphones as you started insulting me. My friend Rick came over and made a joke about me being an asshole (I vacation with him every year and was the friend I was staying with by the way) and you went on a vitriolic rant that he later apologized to me since he believed he started the ball rolling. And if you are so naive as to believe that everyone you spoke to about my commentary didn't immediately forward your correspondence to me, I feel you are not suited to be called any type of academic.

J-wow. you really want to make an enemy for no reason. i just don't see what there is to get so worked up about on that nyc episode. I remember the facts quite differently and felt you were being a pain on purpose to piss me off and gain an edge or something rather than being polite or reasonable it isn't a question of being naive but of being straight forward... i mean what I said and I mean what I presented to you... hence I still see no difference in asking for a hedge before or after asking to play the match the next day... as i recall it was scheduled for the next day but Lynn wanted them out of the way early... but it doesn't really matter on the details it is the spirit of the thing that I have felt you were deliberately antagonizing to make some kind of point just as I see you doing in this episode Me (and my personal favorite response): The point was already made Jason. you were being a dick. You asked for three ruling against me before we even started. And the match was scheduled for that day. I would have to come early which would be a favor to you and unnecessary for me. it is not my fault if you are in the super jackpot without a clock and took too long to play our match. I was waiting for 2 hours for your match to happen. That is on you. So if you wish to consider me an enemy that's fine. But don't think that you could be an asshole and that I will take it like some of the other sad bastards at tournaments that I have seen you treat horribly. Chat Conversation End

By the way, I hear that you are thinking of coming back to the states. You may learn that some of us are less likely to be polite than the English...and I have yet to find an English player to sing your praises Jason. Don't be so hasty to come back to the states. And Phil Simborg, thank you for the kind words. It must pain you in your new role of being a mentor to not be able to do what you used to do, and call someone who is being an utter fucktard a fucktard. Don't worry; I will pick up the flag you have dropped. Love to all (well, all but one), Carter
