This is off topic (not about the incident in the NO super jackpot), but you are confusing me a bit.
On one hand you write that we want to make backgammon a pleasant and safe place to compete which I believe is something most can agree to.
On the other hand you will call a TD to enforce that the opponent stays on the bar if he accidentally put himself there or to enforce that the opponent has to cube if he accidentally touches the cube.
I believe those 2 things are in conflict unless I am misunderstanding what you write.
You just want to enforce the rules. That is the same with Jason. He also just wants to follow the rules. It seems to me both of you are not shy about trying to test and use the rules if that can give you an advantage, justifying it by saying you are only following the rules. It is not allowed for kibitzers to say anything during a match so again a point can be made that Jason was merely enforcing a rule if he in fact shushed a spectator.
I believe it is not always right to try to use the rules to your advantage. In the cases I mention here, including those where you describe what you would do (keep opponent on the bar, etc.), I believe the gentleman/fair thing to do is to cut the opponent some slack. That creates a more pleasant environment without compromising the competitive Nature of the event.
