I would be surprised if a player would be forfeited in Backgammon for making a note on his score sheet. It is against the rules, but the penalty for breaking that rule is, currently, up to the individual TD.

I think most TD's would issue a warning to any but an Open Division player. And an Open Division player, who clearly should know better, at worst, I think, might get a 1 point penalty. If he was warned and did it a second time, then forfeiture would be a reasonable penalty, in my opinion.

I believe it is a good rule and all rules, good or bad should be enforced reasonably.
