Etiquette insanity (OT?)

The ruling seems perfectly legit to me. Perhaps you disagree with the rule more than the rules? The guy got two warnings then did it a third time after being warned that would result in forfeiture. You sound shocked and surprised and a little appalled that he would be disqualified. Why? He was warned, told what would happened if he did it yet another time, then did it.
The article seems to spell out very clearly the rules that were violated. He has been told his entire career that this was not allowed. It seems odd that lots of people in his chess circle over the years say things like 'we told him that was illegal' etc... and then this happens and he posts "I did not know it was against the rules. It sounds like any athlete who gets busted on random drug X and then comes out and says "Oh, I was taking totally legal drug Y and didn't realize it had some X in it! Oopsie!"
Chess and backgammon are very different games and I can see why they would need a blanket rule such as this to simplify things and not condone making exceptions because his notes said this or that. I hope on the appeal So doesn't lose any ratings points. That seems fair to me.
