It seems pretty lame to me that someone would be disqualified for those notes that he put on his scorecard, and I think most would agree. However, if you don't have a black and white rule, then you're going to have the arbiter deciding what notes are allowed and which are not, and many will fall into a grey area. This seems like it would cause more ambiguity and controversy. Also, if they allow you to write encouraging notes to yourself, what is to stop someone from writing a novel during their opponents turn to try and distract them.

Maybe, if you want an encouraging note on your scorecard, you can put it on before the match starts and have it approved. I know things like this seem petty, but that's what happens whenever you are competing at anything at the highest levels.
