I think you only see the grey area because you probably know player B and like him....
In my case, you are wrong. For me it's not merely about knowing player B, and yes, I do like him. It's about trusting him when he says he wasn't aware of the situation and believed what his opponent told him.
You now know who player A was. I think it's fair (and you could have done some research, anyway, to find out) that I point out who player B was -- David Kettler.
David and I were in the exact same position when our matches began. The difference in my case was that a hedge was never discussed. I didn't know the conditions of the payouts, either. (My ignorance on this matter was mentioned in that thread, BTW.) I knew there was money up for grabs down the line somewhere, but I didn't know when the payouts would begin. I'm not much of a hedger, anyway, so even if I had been offered one I probably would have politely declined.
(FWIW, David and I -- by winning these respective matches -- joined Ray Fogerlund and Joe Russell as the four players representing the US in the 16-player international part of the competition. Just looked up results but didn't see payouts. Minakami of Japan over Barget of England with semifinalists being Ronn of Sweden and Rinaldi of Italy. Deduction leads me to believe that the total prize pool was something like 16,000 Euros. Also I don't know if the finals were actually ever played in person, which was the original plan, or completed online. If the former there was some travel stipend, at least there was going to be for US players who made it far enough. You can see none did.)
