Looking at the Russell/Mochy match, it's sort of par for the course to see Mochy play under 2, but you also have to be impressed with Joe Russell.
The past few months I have spent a lot of time in LA and had the pleasure of playing a lot more with Joe, Sax, Glass, Wachtel, and lately, Jim Pasco. I've gained renewed respect for the LA bunch, but not only for their amazing backgammon skills, but for just being good guys.
Last week Joe blew a cube and I finally won a bet from him, but every other bet and picture and dispute about a position proved him to be the Giant that he is. He even came up with a really gutsy and inventive play that nobody else considered or thought could be right, and it was.
I really don't mind being the fish in that game. The stakes aren't that high and with a little good dice I've managed to stay above water. It reminds me of the old days when I was first getting into this game seriously and I payed my dues plenty against the likes of:
Howard Ring, David Wells, Sly, Muench, Markowitz, Jake, Rich Lloyd, Zavoral, Taki, Bobby Anderson, DeFotus, Hal Mauser, Neil, Wolock, Franks (Mary), and a few others.
Like then, it is worth donating a few buck for the fun we had and to be around such good people. Best entertainment and education I've ever had and continue to have.
Tournaments are a lot of fun in their way, but there is nothing like the friendships and bonds you make in a chouette, and you really get to know the people well.
My hats off to the LA group for carrying on the tradition of playing great backgammon, playing honestly and with good sportsmanship, and still remembering to be kind and share your knowledge with others.
