another idea and a question

In Response To: Mochy/Simborg Time Penalty? (Jeremy Bagai)

One of the most exciting matches of the year was Mochy's quarterfinal match in San Antonio when he and Loreo each had only a few seconds on their clock at toward the end of the match.

Mochy had an opening 6-1 and double slotted and later when he was in a massive back game and only had the 6 point in his board, he broke the 6 point!

Of course the PR's were through the roof, and this was not your typical backgammon game, and you have to give Loreo credit for keeping his cool, not running out of time, and winning the match (much to my joy as I was to play the winner and you know who I would rather face!).

Speed gammon is fun to play and watch; money games are exciting, especially when there is a sizeable stake, good players, and if you though in some variations like spotting the cube or 3-1 or play slot-gammon or NackGammon or Random Gammon.

Let's see how the duel goes on Monday and if I beat Mochy too bad and feel sorry for him (he's really a nice guy), I may give him another crack at a variation with very compressed time delays.

The whole concept of using clocks in money games is something I, and many others, would find most enjoyable. Nothing makes a great game more boring than someone taking forever to make a play, or listening to 4 guys in the chou arguing and offering bets and settlement when the cube is on 1 or 2.

Now, I was talking with Kit about the advantages of starting with the cube vs. the advantage of getting the opening 3-1, and he said holding the cube will turn out to be better.

So I put a position into XG where player A has an opening 3-1 and Player B is now on roll, but he's holding a 2 cube.

XG shows player B to have -.159 equity before the roll! It shows Player A winning 10 percent more games and 5 percent more gammons.

I agree with Kit that the cube is better, but this shows the 3-1 player having a huge advantage.

Or, if you give Player A the opening roll holding the cube, before he rolls he is + .084. But if you put the cube in the middle and give him an opening 3-1, he is +.254.

So is it simply not possible to compare these two spots this way, or am I doing it wrong or looking at it wrong? (One thing I can be sure of, Kit is not the one who is wrong.)
