I can't believe what I'm reading in this thread! Are you telling me you want to make rules that will put me in violation of them, if I allow a "male over 50" with problems I don't have, to take an emergency break just on his say-so, without having to call the TD? What if the TD is busy making a ruling on something else (or someone else's need for an extra bathroom break?)
What if he's diabetic? We have an increasing number of players with this condition, and they may have to "go" suddenly, and they also may have got off schedule, forgotten the time, and be overdue for their insulin injection. None of these problems are going to add more than one additional break of probably well under 10 minutes. Is that really such a big deal? Not to me. None of my opponents are going to wet their pants or go into a diabetic coma because I wouldn't agree to an additional break for them. If this rule gets traction and is adopted by the ABT, and I get penalized for doing the decent thing for an elderly or sick opponent, my days of tournament play will be over.
And let's not even get started on related problems that might occur with women under the age of 45 or so. Some of us over that age, still want to be considerate and also grow the game with that demographic.
And what about the player who comes back from dinner break sick from some bad sushi or just too much food at the buffet? I'm cutting that poor dude an additional 10 minute break too, if he needs it.
If this is really a huge issue, just start the tournament a half-hour earlier. And if you have an auction, get rid of it and start everyone playing on time!
Will someone in a position of authority, please take this idea out back somewhere and shoot it? Thanks much!
