It won't make much of a difference. Variance reduction numbers are estimated at a lower ply than the plays themselves, except for 0 ply (GNU) / 1 ply (XG) rollouts. The speed gain in turning VR off should be minimal : a few %.

At least, that's what GNU does, but XG simply has to do the same, or its rollouts wouldn't be as fast as they are.
