Opening roll of 41

All I am seeing here is responses quoting rollout data or situational analysis after other rolls. I think what Rick wants here is a little support. Rick, you can review the opening play and see how much difference there is between your play and the best plays at the top in the menu bar. You might then plug your play into your computer depending on what program you have/use.
In the big picture it is thinking like yours that leads one to become a great player. How bad can it really be to start both 5 points, especially since all posts seem to agree that (4,1) is the worst opening roll? A consensus that was also confirmed by Snowie rollouts in Bart Brooks book on the free drop.
So, why NOT try to secure a/any/either 5 point with a shitty number? Mostly, no matter what your opponent rolls you will secure one at your next turn. That can't be too bad.
If hit twice, you may return hit on your side of the board and gain the equivalent of rolling 66, (24 pips). Playing this way will unstack the heavy 6 point and split your back men, both desirable early game goals. Even better most, if not all, players who recognize your play as wrong, will not know the best response because they were not able to memorize it from a table and they are not talented enough know how intuitively.
These are fine compensations for the equity you will lose by making a sub optimal play. Meanwhile how sub optimal it is will be sort of minor in the big picture as it is an opening play.
You have experimented with this play and you like it. Now find the best play listed in Stick's opening moves... and play with that. You will begin to understand from experience why it is better!
Keep thinking out of the box and making imaginative plays, and we will see you someday in the finals before the default/memory/chart players maybe!
Good luck going forward, brother backgammoneer!
