Stick,
Excellent concise wrap up for all that may have missed the event as well as those who may watched portions of the event. It is greatly appreciated you hard work, time and efforts in transcribing the match for those who would like to watch and simultaneously review the video with XG as a learning experience.
Hats off to Phil and Mochy and all sponsors for coordinating such an event in an effort to “Promote Backgammon” at the same time while donating money to a good cause relating to backgammon.
Interesting to note the disparity in the posts concerning the event with regards to commentary.
As reported by Phil, the objective was to “Promote” and demonstrate the “Excitement” of backgammon. With that objective in mind you are going to have an extremely broad target audience from all walks of life, some with limited to no knowledge of the game, to the tour playing experts, all with varying degrees of interest.
I think the key to capture this wide audience is to have a little something in it for all. This is very successfully done by the NFL broadcasts in how they approach commentary with the use, experts and color commentary. They want to provide expert analysis targeted to the initiated and basic information and color commentary to the uninitiated. Consistently commentators will provide strategy as it relates to specific situations in the game and how it applies to trends backed by analysts reciting what appear to be relevant statistics. These stats mean nothing to the diligent wife who is continuously refilling the guacamole bow and keeping beer on ice (no intent to be chauvinistic), while watching the game passively, but surely she loves to hear how the running back’s wife took a sledge hammer to his new Ferrari when he came home drunk at 5:00 AM. The other end of the spectrum, the degenerate gambler wagering on in game action or the fantasy junkies, parses every word of analyst commentary while simultaneously looking at moving lines. Something in it for everyone.
With regards to the commentary it was excellent color. Falafel (Lobster) is great fun to listen to because his delivery and emotions are funny. Carter is excellent contributor and has a wealth of knowledge and is quite spontaneous, not to mention a gift for gab. MCG (Genius) is definitely the deep thought thinking man. He is best described as reserved and speaks only when spoken to. In my opinion they made a good triad.
I don’t agree that XG should not have been employed during the broadcast. A NFL announcer always has a team of qualified analyst’s fact checking and providing immediate situational information to enhance and validate commentary. XG has just that ability. It doesn’t have to be in forefront, but clearly needs to be presented in specific situations, especially in complex or highly volatile positions. It also has the ability to provide running game winning percentages and equities as the game progresses as well as the unique ability to show vast changes as it relates specific rolls. Siting some of the information will satisfy the initiated, but soft commentary supported by XG can educate and enlighten the uninitiated.
The goal of commentary is to keep the viewer attached or integrated into the game. Having commentators speculating or spewing disparate comments only confuses the audience. Surely this can be reduced withy the validation by XG in spots throughout the match or event. Unfortunately in sort of went in that direction.
It sort of reminded me of a “Chouett” like arena. As I stated to you, my father used to say chouetts are akin to a watching a herd full of performing circus elephants with diarrhea, one has the opportunity to witness amazing death defying acts, stupendous execution, where seemingly out of nowhere come torrents of shit!!!!
It was a great event. I look forward to more in the future and the promotion of backgammon. We can all coordinate to polish commentary to educate, entertain and promote to make the events a big hit.
