I agree with all these posts and was delighted to see these and several other youngsters in the intermediate. Personally it made me feel very happy and proud to have my son, Dan, back into the backgammon scene--he played well and handled wins and losses with grace and humor. Dan will join me in LA and several other tournaments in the future.
I was also thrilled to have one of my students fro Jamaica there with us--joe Issa. He is a leader in the business and backgammon community in a very active backgammon group in Jamaica and he enjoyed the tournament and the comradie so much he is planning to come back to Charlotte with his whole family. His son, John John is one of my brightest young students--oh, he is 7 years old!
What makes these people fall in love with the game is not just the game, but those dinners with the guys and seeing all the fun we have together and how kind and friendly people are (a couple of notable exceptions but every large group has one or two bad apples.).
We need to find ways to make tournament more about creating time and space to have fun together--sightsee--enjoy good food--some time to hang out and share stories and philosophy and yes, positions and bad beat stories too.
I'm optimistic--I see a lot of good things in the future. Just seeing posts like this recognizing and welcoming new players and appreciating streamers and organizers. And while we are on the subject, let's not forget how much Bill riles and Karen and Tara and Julius give back. Yes, I know, I don't always agree with them on everything, but I still have great respect and appreciation for what they do.
