Standard Contrast Rules for Tournament Boards

I am looking into purchasing a new Erhan Board - great feel and almost all customizable. That being said, I was looking dozens of examples of great boards and noticed that virtually all use three colors for the playing surface - dark, light, and some form of contrasting color for the background.
I was curious if there are any general rules (USBGF/ABT official/unofficial) about board coloring.
One idea I had was to use two colors instead of three. The lighter would make up the background, and the darker would create half of the points in solid fill, and then simply outline the other half with the background color filling in.
Do you see any potential issues here? Have you played on a surface like this?
