"One day, at the Riv, Manny told us there was a guy who was a big roller who was looking for some backgammon action. He wanted to play for $500 a point. So my guys backed me and arranged for us to play. We asked Manny to ask around and make sure the guy was not a pro or a crook, and he came back and warned me not to play him. So I didn't. His name was Gabby something."

Could this have been Gabby Horowitz? In one of his books, Kleinman has a chapter on him, describing him as a known dice cheat. He was accidentally shot in the head by a friend and was mentally impaired.

It's an excellent story.
