Standard Contrast Rules for Tournament Boards

Interesting discussion. Timely as I am in the process of ordering an Erhan board myself.

For serious play I prefer 'gray scale' boards, with bright and high contrast checkers. Although the picture does not quite capture its real color (which is a truer gray than the olive gray shown), this is my tournament board: http://www.zontikgames.com/backgammon/velour-gray-black-white.html. Not the prettiest board around, but I don't lose the checkers in the field or on the bar. And the gray scale of the board is easy on the eyes with extended play.

One thing that hasn't been noted so far, but I think it is important: make sure that you have high contrast between the checkers and the exterior color of the board. That is the color of the bar and what you really don't want is to not see a checker up there. That is easier to do than you think, particularly playing when tired or otherwise on auto-pilot.

I brought my beautiful brown and creme Aries board (vintage 1980) to the San Antonio tournament and lived to regret it.
