Suppose we had 13 on ace

There would be no need to waste the pip right away. With 4 checkers to bring around you could often position them to take advantage of 5-5 even without the 5 point being filled. What is more likely: That you roll exactly a 5-5 and it costs you or that the pip you used inside comes back to haunt you?
