There are indications that a model of backgammon with a dominant element of "gambling" could conceivably propel the game to a higher level of popularity. Poker is now the number one game in popularity world wide on the internet, and live as well.

In my view, a non-gambling model, similar to Bridge for example, also has a strong chance of being the catalyst that moves the game to a higher level of popularity.

Both kinds of models, or combinations, may become successful, and indeed one may feed off of, or be combined with the other. Further, the same people and organizations need not be promoters of both, or may not prefer to, which is perfectly ok.
