Using the Doubling Cube in a Non-Turn Based Game

Playing a game of chance that progresses along in discrete increments where either side is allowed to double between increments brings up the question of which person should act first. Since one would rather be doubled, and even more so if playing with beavers, than double, there must be some type of rule established wherein one player must act first. One solution would be for the players to alternate acting first. They could announce at each increment if they were doubling or not, after which the 2nd player would act: take; drop; beaver; decide to double if not doubled.
Another method is to have hidden decisions. Both players decide what they are doing at each increment, but it is not known to the opponent until both have decided. This could be most easily done electronically. By using two centered cubes, where each player has access to his own, you would solve the problem of both players doubling on the same turn. As a twist, you could play where the first player to double kills the other player's centered cube, unless that player had also chosen to double on the same turn.
I am sure there are other interesting methods and eagerly await hearing them.
