hi Jakob,
Backgammon without money is a game for children.
I believe that many share this thought and i also believe that this is one of the reasons BG suffers. You're mixing to interests. The motivation of earning money and having fun playing the game is not the same.
Is it no fun to play chess for nothing? Or play tennis for nothing? I guess reality proves that money isn't needed here. It might be because to some part gamblers are attracted to BG and to some part people having simply fun and trying to play as good as possible.
But I can show another reason why BG lacks popularity: see here:

This are the results of Wimbledon of 2014. yes.... and what's special about it? Nothing, absolutely nothing. Now look here:
http://www.gammonmanager.com/turnering.php?tournament=155&showrounds=2&subdivision=1&beginround=3
the results table of the Nordic Open. One of the 3 most important BG tourneys. And the final results are not there? Any further questions? (and this is not the only example, but the most prominent I knew)
ciao Frank
