Brilliant...I like this idea better than any of the ones I had brainstormed myself.
In order to implement in practice, I created some doubling chips. The 'double' chip had 'Double' on one side and 'No Double' on the other. The 'take' chip had 'Take' on one side and 'Pass' on the other. Each player gets one of each chip, and the game starts with the cube in the center.
At the first opportunity to double, each player shields their 'double' chip and decides whether or not they would like to double the current position. When both players have decided, they simultaneously reveal whether their 'double' chip indicated that they would like to double the position. If neither players' double chip indicates 'Double', the game continues on to the next discrete increment. If one player's chip indicates 'Double', that player uses the doubling cube to double his opponent, who is free to take or pass. If both players' double chip indicates 'Double', then both players use their 'take' chip (hidden from the opponent of course) to determine whether they would like to take or pass. After both players have finalized their 'take' chip decision, they are revealed. If both players take, the cube gets increased by a factor of 4 and remains centered. If both pass, the game is settled at 0. If only one player accepts, the player who accepts wins 2x the value of the centered cube.
Once the cube is accepted and owned by one player, there is no further need for any of the chips.
