Magriel's criteria can break down when the chances of gammon wins and losses go up. They are more suited to moderate gammon positions or DMP play. I believe that at DMP you'd play 7/4*, but that is close. One thing to remember is that 7/4* results in less blocking points than 5/4(3), so the positional gains are not that clear cut.
