Nate Silver, I hope you know who he is, ranked Lebron's supporting cast 60th out of the last 62 NBA finals teams.

Is there any connection between this and the fact of Lebron's great statistical performance? If he is doing a one-man show, it is not surprising he is racking up big numbers. Remember when Wilt Chamberlain averaged 50 points a game for a season? Remember Wilt's 100-point game? It is no surprise to me that Chamberlain did not win a championship in those years. It was not until he played a balanced, lower-scoring style, and had a good team around him, that he got a ring. Wilt was a far more valuable player when his stats were lower. Stats do not make an MVP.

I agree that Lebron is the best player in the NBA. I am intrigued by the discussion that he deserves MVP. At the end of the day, however, I am comfortable with the tacit understanding now used by the NBA and NFL. The MVP must be chosen from the winning team.

If your team loses, then you cannot have been very valuable to them. Your team could just as easily have lost if you were replaced by the ticket-taker, one of the broadcast announcers, or, heaven forbid, me! What are we supposed to say? Without Lebron, Cleveland never would have been able to lose?
