Although these are good questions to consider OTB, I don't think that there's much point discussing them on BGO, because everyone who might post in this thread is already aware of the general considerations that go into such a decision, and IMO your understanding of your particular opponent is by far the most important factor here.
For those of you who play in live tournaments, I'm wondering: Do you have a detailed understanding of all the tendencies of all the players that you have ever played? If someone names a random player, can you immediately say, "Oh yeah, he used to have a tendency to take way too deeply; I remember a tournament back in 2012 where he took a 1.4 drop at 3a7a, but since late 2013, he's gotten better about that, except that he still takes too deeply if it's late in the match and he's behind in the score, or if he's low on time," etc.? In other words, do you know your opponents as well as you know your reference positions?
I understand that it may be bad strategy and bad politics to voice this kind of information in public, so I'm not asking anyone to name names, but I'm just wondering if the fanaticism that some people display towards bot data extends to human data. The general impression I've gotten is that the answer is no. Human opponents could be replaced by crippled bots with an equivalent PR and it would make no difference to how most people play the game.
In my own playing group, I can usually predict how each of my regular opponents will play in any given position. If I mis-predict, then I regard that as almost a big a blunder as misplaying a move myself, worthy of a comparable amount of attention and study.
