'We all know that people who recently have to move up from Intermediate to Open are usually at a great disadvantage, so much so that some people actually stop coming to tournaments at that point. This will help encourage them to come and level the playing field a little.'

I really don't think this would be effective at keeping most 'promoted' intermediates involved in Open events after their 'free bye' period expired, unless they would have gravitated to Open events without the incentive. Sure, one or two may try it and find that it is not as tough as they thought, but most will revert to their 'non-incentivized' path, IMO.

Also, your suggestion would make the awarding of ABT points very complex. Mochy, playing in a field of 65, would actually be playing in a field of 128, while a 1st time Open player, playing in a filed of 63, would actually be playing in a field of 32. Not quite fair, for ABT purposes.

To make entering an Open less expensive and more enticing to non-Giants, lowering entry fees a little and using tiered side-pools might be an idea worth pursuing. There could be three levels of side-pools; (1) for players who have entered 15 or fewer ABT Opens; (2) for players that have entered more than 15 ABT Opens, but have never been listed as a Giant; (3) for all players that have been listed as a Giant. The side pools could have a tiered fee, or not. Each player would be required to enter the lowest pool he qualified for and the next pool up, except for the Giants, who would only enter the top pool. This could possibly benefit all and create added excitement in the tournament. The lowest ranked players would not be competing against the Giants. The middle players would, also, be involved in one pool with no Giants in it, and the Giants may find more players entering their side-pool from the middle group than would have occurred otherwise. You could, also, achieve this with tiered entry fees and no side-pools.

Another, simpler, idea would be to have two side-pools for X fee, say $50. The side-pools would be (1)all non-Giants and (2)everyone. You must enter both, unless you are a Giant, and then you can only enter one. To keep the Giants interested a 3rd side-pool for 2x, or 4x, could be run just for them.

These suggestions are intended to encourage more non-Giants to enter Open events by providing them with more excitement and more chances to cash, by creating pools (side-pools or tiered entry fees)of similarly skilled players.
